Tailings Management

When mining companies crush, grind and process ore to extract valuable metals, they also produce a waste material called “tailings”. Tailings are commonly in the form of a slurry consisting of fine particles and water. Tailings management is a key challenge for mining companies and has been the source of increased public scrutiny, particularly following the recent tragic loss of life following the failures of iron ore tailings dams in Brazil.

Detour Gold views safe and sustainable tailings management of one of its most important responsibilities. The Company designs, constructs and operates the tailings and water management infrastructure at the Detour Lake Mine in accordance with the Mining Association of Canada’s Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities. We are firmly committed to the safe operation of our tailings facilities and to sharing information about our tailings management practices with our community stakeholders.

Investor Mining and Tailings Safety Initiative

The Investor Mining & Tailings Safety Initiative is an investor-led initiative to improve disclosure standards around tailings management in the extractive industry. The Initiative consists of 96 institutional investors representing over US$10.3 trillion in assets under management and is led by representatives of the Church of England Pensions Board and the Swedish Council on Ethics for the AP Pension Funds. In April 2019, the Initiative wrote to 683 extractive companies requesting that they provide additional disclosure regarding their tailings facilities, in a common reporting format, and that they publish this information on their respective websites together with a certification by their CEO or Board Chair. The information will then be compiled and compared on a standard basis. Further information is available at https://www.churchofengland.org/investor-mining-tailings-safety-initiative.

At Detour Gold, we fully support the Investor Mining & Tailings Safety Initiative and we are pleased to share below the response letter from our President & CEO, along with the “Mine Tailings Disclosure Table” in the form requested by the Initiative. This information provides an overview of our tailings management system and other information that will be of value to all of our stakeholders.
